Eatiquette App FAQs
Registration & Privacy
Why should I sign up?
Joining the Eatiquette community and accessing information is totally free. To be able to totally customize your shopping preferences, all you need to do is register/sign up in the Profile section. Simply add your personal details, lifestyle concerns, and ingredient concerns and Eatiquette will flag any ingredients you want to avoid; and help you find, save and purchase products that meet your personal needs.
Do you share my information with any 3rd parties?
Absolutely not! We do not share any personal data with 3rd parties and never will.
How can the app be free if you are not sharing my data?
Indeed, no company can survive if everything is free. We are a small company and have invested our own savings. We will aim to earn from brands, not consumers. We plan to add a new feature soon to link through to a brand’s website, in which case we will earn a small commission because you found the brand through us. We promise to provide facts and not promote one company above another. We’d like to stay away from advertising too in order to remain unbiased. So, if you like what we are doing, please help us by using the app, sharing it with friends and telling us how to make it even more useful!
Help with Nutrition Comparisons
What do the traffic light colors mean for each nutrient category (Calories, Protein, Sugar, etc)?
A nutrient value is marked as green, yellow, or red based upon a number of credible sources, including the recommended daily intake (DRI), nutrient density index, and an evaluation of the average range for that nutrient in similar products. For more information, please visit our website to read the blog article about the traffic light system.
Where are you getting nutritional information from? How often is your database updated? What if I am missing a product or brand?
We’ve initially started with the open source USDA database. We realise this is incomplete and not alway current. We plan to gradually add more brands, products and food categories as we get funding. Remember, this product is in Beta. Let us know what brands or categories you’d like to see! If you see any error in the data please let us know. Providing the barcode number of the product is then important. We’ll amend it as soon as possible.
Why can’t I compare on Cholesterol, Total Carbs, Total Fats or Vitamins and Minerals?
Being a start-up, we have only just begun. We have tried to capture the most commonly used nutrition values and intend to build from here with additional financing. Please feel free to share requests with us via our website or the app. And, please help us build! Provide positive reviews and share with your friends, neighbors, families, and colleagues.
How can I easily find “clean” products with only a few, simple ingredients?
When in a product category, scroll on the top of the page to the far right and click upon the “Ingredients” tab. This will sort your product category by the number of ingredients. If you click upon a product, scroll to the bottom to see the actual ingredient list and the total number of ingredients. In computing the total, we make some judgment calls and approximations. For example, if “canola and/or soybean oil” is a listed ingredient, we assume it is “and,” and count two ingredients.
Help with Food Ingredient Concerns
I have multiple food allergies. How can this app help me steer clear of all of the ingredients I must avoid?
- First thing to do is sign up, or in other words create an account.
- During registration you can identify your ingredients of concern by typing any ingredient. We have also given a pre-selected list of common concerns which can tap to select.
- Then whenever the product details are viewed (whenever you click to view a product or scan), the ingredient of concern (and any variation of that ingredient) will be highlighted in RED BOLD letters.
- In one of our next versions we will include a filtering option to preselect only those products that DON’T contain your concerns.
Once I input my ingredients of concern, will Eatiquette identify and flag those ingredients by its various other names and derivatives?
YES. We have done a lot of the tough, complicated work for you. The table below shows how we define our allergen ingredient derivatives or synonyms. For some of the common allergens, we capture a more elaborate list of ingredients. If you have any additions or concerns, we would love to hear from you. Contact us via our website or app.

Other uncommon allergens like Honey, Celery, Mustard, Tomato, Bell pepper, Balsam of Peru, Legumes, Fruit, Garlic, Hot peppers, Corn/Maize, Poultry Meat, Sulfites, Tartrazine (Yellow #5), Tomatoes and many more can be found by individually identifying the specific ingredient. Synonyms and variation are also identified.
How do I flag ingredients of concern that are not listed in the ingredient concerns list?
In addition to selecting and saving ingredients from the list provided, you may also type in any other ingredient of concern where it says “type any ingredient to search..”. The Eatiquette database will search all possible ingredients (among more than 6,000, across a range of packaged goods categories) to flag those ingredients (or synonyms for those ingredients) in any products you review. Your ingredients, and any variations, will be flagged in red whenever you click to view a product. If you have any difficulties finding your ingredients of concern, please contact us.
Once I find products that meet my specifications, or eliminate those that do not, how do I file them for future reference?
If you come across a product you want to avoid, you can press the red X button (bottom left) and save it to your red list. Likewise, if a product fits your needs and it could become your newly discovered favorite, save it to your green list by tapping the green star ✪.
When I type “sugar” it gives me many types of sugar as an option. Should I select all?
The ingredient search works for any ingredient that contains the word ‘sugar’, so by selecting sugar you will capture all variations of the word. If you are looking for a specific sugar like ‘beet sugar’ then type that. Just know that selecting ‘sugar’ will not capture all ‘sugars’ like for instance high fructose corn syrup or honey.
General Use of the Eatiquette App
Does selecting the Supermarkets we shop at filter out the items that aren’t available in my geography?
Not yet. Currently, your supermarket selections enable us to prioritize products so that we feature more from the most popular grocery stores. Eventually, we hope to filter by region for easier access and ability to “buy local.”
Why are there only limited categories and products available to search from?
Eatiquette is a beta product and we’re so proud to have you as one of our early adopters! Our proprietary deep ingredient analysis and AI algorithms take considerable time and money and so we need to take a building block approach. There are over 400,000 grocery products available in the US with daily changes, and access to commercial databases is costly. We are very reliant upon you, our valued users, for feedback as we seek to grow and expand. So, if there are parts that are useful, and others that are not, please let us know, and spread the word about Eatiquette!
I am on a lifestyle diet. How can you find foods that are gluten-free, vegan, keto, low -sugar. Can products be filtered out that don’t match my diet?
Currently, the unique benefit of Eatiquette is to be able to sort and compare products by key nutritional attributes like sugar, sodium, calories and more. While we foresee filtering could be useful too, we’ve made it a priority to focus on sorting and ingredient warnings first. Many ingredients can be linked to specific diets: so this is one of the features we can build out. We’d love to hear you let us know what would make this app extra useful!
What can I type in the search bar?
The search bar works for product description or brands. So if you want to compare pesto sauce, type “pesto”, or cinnamon cereals, type ‘cinnamon’ and filter on breakfast cereals. Or type ‘Kelloggs’ or ‘Nature Valley’ to compare products of a specific brand.
Is the information you provide unbiased or do brands influence rankings?
We promise to provide facts and not promote one company or brand above another. We’d like to include as many products as possible and help introduce you to new or direct-to-consumer products that meet your needs. If you like what we are doing, please help us by using the app, sharing it with friends and telling us how to make it even more useful!
